Traffic regulation on the Amalfi Coast
and Sorrento Peninsula

If you're considering driving to the Amalfi Coast and utilizing a rental car, it's essential to familiarize yourself with the traffic regulations implemented in 2023.

You might download at the bottom of this page, a more comprehensive PDF.

Here's a summary of the enforced traffic regulations aimed at better managing tourist flows during peak seasons, both along the SS163 road from Positano to Vietri Sul Mare and the Sorrento Peninsula in the towns of Vico Equense, Meta, Piano, Sant’Agnello, and Sorrento.

The stretch of road affected by the ordinance is solely the State Road 163 Amalfitana, about 60 km long, starting from Vietri sul Mare and ending in Positano passing through Cetara, Maiori, Minori, Ravello, Atrani, Amalfi, Conca dei Marini, Furore, and Praiano. Any other road in the area is not affected by alternate license plate circulation (For example, the Provincial road for the Chiunzi Pass with its two branches leading to Maiori and Ravello or the Sr 366 Agerolina are not affected).

The primary rule is as follows:

  • On even-numbered days, cars with the last digit of the license plate being even cannot circulate.

  • On odd-numbered days, cars with the last digit of the license plate being odd cannot circulate.

     When in effect, alternate license plate circulation is valid from 10:00 to 18:00. At any other time, the possibility of traveling on the Amalfi Coast Road with vehicles is not limited.

    Two-wheeled vehicles are not affected by the ordinance. (Motorcycles, scooters, etc.)

When alternate license plates apply on the Amalfi Coast:

- During Holy Week until Easter Monday

- Every day from March 25th to April 1st, 2024.

- Every day from April 24th to May 2nd, 2024.

- From June 1st to July 31st, alternate license plates are in effect on Saturdays, Sundays, and Italian bank holidays. Therefore, on the following dates:

June 1st and 2nd, 2024;

June 8th and 9th, 2024;

June 15th and 16th, 2024;

June 22nd and 23rd, 2024;

June 29th and 30th, 2024;

July 6th and 7th, 2024;

July 13th and 14th, 2024;

July 20th and 21st, 2024;

July 27th and 28th, 2024.

- In August and September, alternate license plates are in effect every day:

- From October 1st to October 31st, alternate license plates are in effect on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Therefore, on the following dates:

October 5th and 6th, 2024;

October 12th and 13th, 2024;

October 19th and 20th, 2024;

October 26th and 27th, 2024.

These regulations apply to non-resident vehicles on the Amalfi Coast.

Exceptions include cars serving disabled individuals with an H card and carrying the cardholder, vehicles belonging to locals, taxis, and buses.

Additionally, vehicles longer than 10.36 meters (34 feet), including those towing trailers, are prohibited from 6:30 am to midnight year-round.

Guests staying at official accommodations on the Amalfi Coast are permitted to travel to their lodgings on the designated day and depart on the scheduled departure day, regardless of their license plate's alignment with mandatory dates, by presenting their reservation. However, they cannot use the Sorrento roads (including Meta and Vico Equense) during this period, following the rule of ODD/EVEN plate number.

For instance, if your license plate ends with an odd number on August 25th, it's advisable to either enter or exit the coast using the route via Agerola. This ensures you bypass any potential traffic restrictions and remain unaffected by the regulations, unlike the Sorrento/Meta/Vico Equense roads

Sorrento Peninsula Rule (not yet enforced for 2024 season) :

Traffic regulations are in place from April to September on the Sorrento Coast Drive (Sorrento, Piano di Sorrento, Sant’Agnello, Meta, Vico Equense).

The rules are effective:

  • From April 8th to May 31st, every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, on holidays (April 25th and May 1st), and the day before holidays (April 24th, April 30th), from 8 am to 7 pm.

  • From June 1st to September 30th, every day from 8 am to 7 pm.

If you're a guest at accommodation on the Amalfi Coast and your license plate ends in an odd number on an odd-numbered day, you're not permitted to drive along the Sorrento Coast. Please take note.

We strongly advise using public transport or car service/taxi when traveling along the Amalfi Coast or Sorrento Coast.

It's recommended to confirm these regulations with us or your accommodation before your visit, especially if you plan to drive your own vehicle or rent a car.

Wishing you a wonderful stay with us!
